Offbeat GIR District

Offbeat GIR District

Offbeat GIR District I admiringly got up to the chirping of birds early in the morning with merciful gusts in the handcrafted cottage which is made of dry grass & traditional outdoor jhula. The alluring surroundings of coconut trees. It was an amazing experience to eat out heavenly desi food cooked with home-grown ingredients. Woahh wondering where will you get such a stay in Gir? http://www.mandeepresort.com/ I’ve been traveling to Gir district and collecting memories, there’s been a lot of self-talking as well as group discussions about these offbeat places to explore. It was a great pleasure, the anonymity of being somewhere nobody knew me. In case you all have read my previous blog- Gir Somnath. You all know I truly enjoyed the Gir a lot in Gir and it influenced me to explore the places in Gir from there. Here are some spots to be added to the GIR trail. Let’s jump on to my itinerary. Which will help you plan your itinerary when visiting Gir. This is one of the most aesthetically pleasing districts of India. Trust me. These places are one of the most culturally and historically rich spots of Gujarat. Places to see in Gir District As mentioned before, this district is filled with amazing architectural gems and historical spots which makes this a fascinating district to visit. Here are a few places that you must visit when exploring this stunning Gir district. You will fall in love with grandness and timeless architecture. The energetic and colorful markets will beckon you to buy beautiful ancient fabric, shoes, jewelry, and so on. Seashore puts a mind at ease: Along with the world-famous Gir Temple, Gir Beach forms an important part of the itinerary for a visitor. It is famous for its beautifully sparkling waves and long stretches of grey sands. Travelers can unwind here after a long day of sightseeing, although, swimming is not recommended. Sunsets are particularly beautiful and add a fascinating touch to the end of a great day. Beauty, Truth & Meaning of our pilgrimage -Prabhas Patan: This is well worth a stop. This museum has protected the parts of the earlier Gir Temple. It is a great job by the Gir Trust. Archaeology lovers must visit this place and see the sculptures from the old Gir temple. This museum is a hidden gem of Somnath. It is about 15 minutes’ walk from the Gir Temple. It is maintained by the government of Gujarat. It was found in 1951. There are nearly 3500 objects exhibited in a raw. The museum also houses an assortment of seashells and pottery shards. Heavy stuff the museum is closed on Wednesdays/public holidays and open from 10:30 to 17:30 hrs on other days. As we entered, rows of fragments from pillars and walls of the destroyed temple of Somnath, greeted us. Left open to the elements they were blackened and severely eroded. They were a depressing sight. But there are two covered buildings, the one to the left, housing the stone slabs with inscriptions collected from around Prabhas Patan, and the one directly in front where the Gujarat government has reconstructed the temple chambers with pillars and domes. Though the labelling is pretty poor so you need to have an eagle eye to find the museum. Some of the exhibits seem to have been restored (faces restored but the body damaged). We spent more than an hour here. In the end, we were left wondering what would have caused the attackers to damage such beautiful sculptures. Don’t forget to Immerse yourself in Triveni Sangam Very nice view especially in the evening and don’t forget to feed something to the birds to see their Gathering. The confluence of the three rivers Hiran, Kapila, and Saraswati is the point where the rivers meet the mighty Arabian Sea. At Triveni Sangam, you will see a lot of white birds which make it a very beautiful place as birds will be all around you flying chirping, etc. Another corner which can make you rejoice- Kamnath: Stunning, that’s what came out from this Rahee’s heart and I started dancing while capturing the beauty- just like a peacock, who dance with an open mind and loving heart. The unbelievable truth here is, this Shiva linga is self-proclaimed and it’s 5000 years old. This spot has crazy footfall in Savan month. It has been said that Lord Krishna stayed back a night here to do Pooja as it was the last visited place of Krishna’s avatar. From this, lord Krishna headed towards Bhalka tirth for another green of god. Tirth which can’t be seen with material eyes but by mercy- Bhalka Tirth: I fondly remember walking up to this I was wondering how they did this. What an incredible architecture. It is the most recognizable scene of my so-called heard virtual story of Bhalka tirth. Is the place where Krishna was hit by an arrow shot by a hunter named Jara, after which he is said to have left the earth for the heavenly abode, an act referred to in the Puranas as Shri Krishna Nijdham Prasthan Leela. It has the everlasting mesmerizing moves of Lord Krishna. Devalia Park Did you assume another famous spot of Gir, from my background?? Apart from Somnath! A nature reserve in Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary. Which is Located 13 km from Sasan. Devalia Park provides a whole wildlife experience to tourists and reduces tourist overload from Gir National Park. Sighting of the Asiatic lion and other wild animals of Gir is easy, within a short period, and at cheaper charges. Do you all know? What can make this nature trip even kin- Savni waterfall: It was the last day of our one-week-long trip and there was no way I was going home without admiring this stunning waterfall at Savni. I truly agree with Roland R. “There’s no better place to find yourself than sitting by a waterfall and listening to its music” Savni waterfall is a must-visit

adalaj stepwell

Adalaj Stepwell

The Adalaj Stepwell-Gujarat The Adalaj Stepwell is located in a serene location in the village, which was constructed centuries ago to provide water to its locals. It became a leisure place for people to meet and seek solace from the harsh summer heat. This place provided people with the opportunity to interact thereby serving as today’s community hall. The village until now continues to gain recognition due to this majestic stepwell, which tourists from everywhere visit. In recent times, the place has gained a lot of traction for pre-wedding photography where couples love to get themselves clicked. People are in awe of its ancient architecture, which has carvings that symbolize the union of Hindu and Muslim cultures. The intricate carvings beautifully depict the everyday life of people in some of the scenes. The stepwell is not just a well as the name suggests, it is located in a beautiful building that also consists of a carved balcony which is used as a backdrop for photographs. The building is three-storeyed with each having a balcony overlooking the well. The view from the top is mesmerizing especially when the rays of the sun merge with the water. The water displays varied colors depending on the angle at which the sun’s rays are. Never have I seen such wonderful shades of water. During each time of the day, the stepwell narrates a different experience. The mornings blissfully depict clear blue water, while the noons seem to tell a story of their own with birds gathered around and the water showcasing a greenish-blue color. The evenings are more subtle where the water is sometimes yellowish. Each time you visit the place, you are sure to have a uniquely different experience. It is seemingly breathtaking and the place leaves one feeling intoxicated. The stepwell is a historical symbol of love as the queen ensured its completion after the death of her husband – The King. It continues to remain a symbol of love as it is visited by couples in search of solitude who choose to spend time away from the hustle-bustle of the city. The stepwell has witnessed thousands of love stories of people from not just nearby places but from all across the globe. Even foreigners put this location on their list to visit here while visiting Gujarat, so I would like to call it a “multicultural heritage of love”.

Hathni Mata, Somnath Gir

Hathni Mata

Hathni Mata Falls & a Temple, Gujarat “I don’t want to spend decades on this planet and never see the diversity of places god created”. You will tell yourself this if you haven’t yet visited the serene Hathni Mata Falls and a small temple where people visit with faith. More than the final destination the path will mesmerize you. Hathni Mata is a temple and waterfall place to visit in the Sarasava village near Pavagadh in Gujarat. It is situated 21 kilometers from Pavagadh 22 kilometers from Jambughoda and a total of 78.4 kilometres from Vadodara Gujarat. Pavagadh is 46 kilometers from Vadodara. It is known for its famous Mahakali temple which is visited by thousands of pilgrims. The temple is situated on a hill and you can reach there by climbing around 1000 stairs or via a cable car. Jambughoda is at a distance of 82 kilometers from Vadodara and this place is well known for its wildlife sanctuary. When you think of visiting Hathni Mata waterfall we recommend you add Pavagadh also in your itinerary if you wish to make a journey to god’s abode. And to add Jambughoda as well you should add an extra night to stay over at the nearby resorts so that you can enjoy the forest as well. Hathni Mata is an ideal place for a one-day picnic and is specially visited during weekends and mostly during the monsoon season. The Hathni Mata waterfall gives a spectacular view during the monsoon. It is one of the picturesque waterfalls in Gujarat. Laden by lush green hills, the Hathni Mata waterfalls are an oasis of divine beauty. It is a 100 m-long water body that falls beautifully along a cliff. A small temple dedicated to Hathni Mata is located in the cave adjacent to the waterfall. The name Hathni is derived from the local tribal community of the rock that looks like a baby elephant at the foot of the waterfall. If you love the sound of falling water from a height, if that sounds like music to you along with the sound of various chirpings and sounds of animals then this is the place for you. If you wish to engage in some nature photography while having a spiritual experience then this is the place for you. The ambiance is completed by a small pond, animals, and birds that inhabit the area along with its being lush green. The trail to this waterfall and temple is narrow but the visuals along the trail will make you skip a beat. Entry to this place is free of cost. It is open all year round but recommended to visit during monsoon so you have a sight of a heavy waterfall. If you visit during monsoon please avoid rock climbing or any steep steps for that matter. You can visit Hathni Mata from the early morning hours till 6 pm even though it is an open place one must avoid it after it is dark due to the wilderness. It is recommended to carry your water bottle and wear sturdy shoes. Also, carry snacks/food items as per your requirement. You can reach this place by rickshaw from Jambughoda or Pavagadh and also by a two-wheeler or four-wheeler.

Rani ki Vaav

Rani ki Vaav

India is already well known for its monuments which were built as symbols of love by a man for his beloved; be it The Taj Mahal, Mastani Mahal, or Roopmati’s Pavilion. So is our UNESCO World Heritage site – Rani ki Vav in Patan but with a major twist in the love story. This huge architectural piece was constructed under the reign of Rani Udayamati for her late husband Raja Bhimdev. It is one of the rarest to be found, a love tribute from a woman to a man. Visiting this 11th-century wonder monument takes us back 900 years as Rani ki Vav has been very carefully maintained and has become India’s cleanest iconic place. This type of structure is only found in the Indian subcontinent and falls under the category of step-wells. The Rani ki Vav or the queen’s stepwell is probably the most detailed yet beautiful example of a stepwell throughout the world. Although these structures have been in India since the 3rd Millennium BC, Rani ki Vav is special because it was made as an inverted subterranean temple. Can you imagine, an upside-down temple? The innovative design of a stepwell and with a beautiful feel of entering the most sacred part of the temple – water. It celebrates the sanctity of water intensely and divinely. Travelling to Patan to see the glorious Rani ki Vav is a full-day task and it’s best to get the early morning bus which takes almost 3 hours to cover the 127 km distance from Ahmedabad. There isn’t a direct train from Ahmedabad station but one can always take a train from Sabarmati. Once at Patan, the history of Gujarat’s glorious past begins to unfold. Patan was the then capital city of the Solanki Kingdom with many excavations bringing out the sophistication of the empire as it dealt in coins and had a flourishing economy. But this kingdom was soon destroyed because of floods and major earthquakes. The Rani ki Vav was surprisingly re-discovered in the mid-20th century under huge layers of sand brought in by the mysterious Saraswati River when it flooded the city. This is the reason it took almost 30 years for the excavation to complete though it was discovered in the 1940s. The difficult yet successful task of bringing back the old glory was undertaken by the ASI . Due to this monumental achievement by ASI, it has made its mark as a UNESCO world heritage in 2014. To enter this marvellous arena the Indian nationals buy a ticket worth Rs 40 only but it is priced at Rs 600 for foreigners. The entry is towards the east and the step well is last to be seen at the far west. Surrounded by lush greenery it is a magnificent 7-storey structure that took almost 20 years to complete. The 212 pillars are spread around in a highly symmetrical manner in the 7 staircase levels. The structure itself is 213 feet long, 66 feet wide, and 92 feet in depth. The 31-foot square water tank must have been of both spiritual and natural significance. Visiting this tourist attraction today also makes us wonder how such a complex architectural wonder was designed a thousand years ago without having the modern tools or knowing modern Trigonometry. At first glance, it looks like an inverted ancient temple with each of its pillars having statues and impressions of gods, goddesses, and celestial beings. The carvings themselves are stunning with the iconography just as beautiful as the Vishnu temples in India. Though there are over 800 sculptures on the inner wall, the most visually stunning and eye-catching are the 299 Apsaras with their large variety of fashion statements where one of them can even be seen applying lipstick while others carrying unique costumes & ornaments along with unique hairstyles. But as most of the carvings are of Vishnu it is believed to be a Vishnu temple showing his empire of celestial, mythical creatures along with other significant flora and fauna which are very lifelike and the epitome of great craftsmanship. Since it was flooded in the 13th century and had almost disappeared till the 19th century it’s been a magical journey for the Indian government to bring it back to its former glory. Its no doubt that today it is of utmost national importance and to honor it the Indian government has printed a picture of Rani ki Vav on the new Hundred Rupees note which makes it “note-worthy”.

Sevasi Stepwell

Sevasi Stepwell

“It is rightly said that travelling gives you more knowledge and new insights. If you will never go you will never know.” Here I am going to talk about a small touristy place called the Sevasi Vav, Vav is a stepwell. You might think about what’s there to visit a stepwell. But I would like to say that one must travel to whichever place you get an opportunity to. Step wells are wells or ponds with underground flights of stairs leading down to the level of water. They may be multi-storied, and often ornamented with intricate carvings on their pillars and walls. Step wells are known as Vav in Gujarati and Baori in Hindi. In ancient times, step-wells were a source of water mainly to balance out the water availability during seasonal fluctuations. During the old times, step-wells could be found in any and every part of India. Their water storage effectiveness helped residents survive for years, in the semi-arid climate and seasonal fluctuations. They were mostly constructed by the wealthy families and the Royals of those times. Step wells are very deep and have steep steps to the structure. Step wells were also used mostly as a place for gatherings and social functions. It was like a getaway place for the women as they danced and sang together shared their grief and could be themselves for that short period. The architecture of step wells includes steep steps that extend down to the water table which provides water for drinking, washing, bathing, and farming. The construction of most step-wells had an inspiration or story behind it. The step wells are much more complicated and represent stunning examples of both Hindu and Islamic architecture. There were thousands of step wells present in India but modernization and a general lack of apathy towards these traditional structures have led most of them to ruins. Most of them are now nothing but a filthy place of garbage with the structures demolished on their own with no one to care for them. The surviving step-wells can be found in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. Situated on the outskirts of the city this Vav is located in Sevasi which falls on the way to sindhrot and is close to New Alkapuri. It is a 500-year-old vav that is said to be built in memory of the legendary spiritual leader, Shri Vidyadhar, in 1543 CE. About this vav, it is said that young girls decked in gold were sacrificed on full moon nights for prosperity. The Vav is built with a combination of brickwork and a system of stone columns that goes seven levels below the ground. This vav just like any other is situated in the east-west direction. There are a few carvings of animals like elephants and tigers, still very much visible there. The structure starts through a gate-like structure with a dome in the centre. This gate is decorated with patterns of elephants and tigers in relief work on the right and left sides respectively. Because of a lack of security, the vav got trespassed by a person who damaged the frescoes by painting them orange to make a living out of it. Despite the complaints being made no one is looking into the matter and therefore the Vav is no longer the same as it used to be even 3,4 years back. Sevasi Vav is becoming extremely popular for photography enthusiasts because the ruins do look beautiful. No wonder why a lot of pre-wedding photoshoots and fashion photo shoots have started taking place here.

Saputara

Saputara – Imprint by Travel Rahee

Have you always wanted to witness the Gira Falls at the Saputara Hills? Desire to spend some thrilling moments while mountaineering?? If it’s yes by all means!! Then I would suggest you not miss out on any opportunity and make a Beeline towards Saputara Destination. As a travel blogger, I can’t resist travelling to travel an amazing hill, meet new people, and learn about different cultures. I travel for destinations and to experience Mother Nature. Gujarat’s only hill station – Saputara Hills, the thick green forests and gushing waterfalls provide a legitimate feel of the state. There’s so much to do here; from trekking to paddling your way across a river to admiring the exhibits at hills around or taking a stroll through a beautiful adventure park. Alright now let me begin my trail. In August 2018 I traveled to this beautiful destination and had such an amazing unforgettable time here. I did experience the night camping, mountaineering and waterfalls. Yes, it was a trekking toe. How to Reach Saputara Hills? One of the most common questions that everyone asks me is how to reach Saputara hill station. And a lot of people usually want an option on a low budget so, here is everything you need to know to plan your trip to the Great Hills of Saputara. There’s no railway station at Saputara exactly. The Waghai railway station at Bilimora is the nearest railhead from Saputara. (Approximately 50 kilometres away). About the suitable mode of transport- Roadway is the best mode of Travel to Saputara via Amba Bari. We started this journey from Baroda to Saputara. – We took a road map and started at night so that we could reach in the Morning to admire the morning beauty of the monsoon hills. Reaching Amba Bari We reached ambaBari in the morning and found a nice hotel to freshen up and start the day. Amba Bari has an indefinite view and weather, especially in August. And we started our trek from this place. Here is the trek begins to Gotiyamal. Heading to Gotiyamal We reached Gotiyamal via trekking. You can also reach here via bus. Depending on what you prefer. It will take you around 1 hour 15 minutes via bus or car. We chose trekking to reach Gotiyamal. Once you reach “Gotiyamal” you’re one step closer to the eminence of nature. Now, once you reach here, you might wonder what is there to see around here except for the wide expanse of nature. Well, don’t worry because there are several things for you to do here to keep yourself entertained and interested. Here are a few top things that you should try when visiting the Saputara Hills. Walk Around the Great Gotiyamal One of the best and most amazing things to do here is to roam around the greenery. You will find several people over here doing the same. But don’t worry, the place is so huge that you can easily find some peace and solitude from the crowd. The view looks as intimidating as you move forward and away from the land. There is absolutely nothing to see for miles except for the green shrubs and you can see the beauty of the wooden house, people were so kind there and all were living their routine lives there. It looked so beautiful I wonder how it will feel to have a home in between Mother Nature. Take Clichéd Photos in the Gotiyamal Forest I love taking pictures and if you do too then this place is an absolute gold mine for photography. You can take numerous funky and creative pictures here and have an amazing photoshoot with different props and outfits. Trust me, even though you get a green background, you can get a lot out of this backdrop Staying in the Tent Surrounded by Green Field – Baradpani If you wish to, then you definitely should stay in Tent or the resorts or hotels are always available nearby. Both places are said to be one of the most beautiful and extravagant places to stay at. You can have numerous entertainment activities like a bonfire, late late-night talks along with delicious meals and memorable souvenirs. And since you stay near the mountains, you can spend a long time in the Greenfield and can also witness the moonrise and sunrise here. Saputara Lake- Enjoy the Boating One of the most famous parts about visiting this lake is its sight-seeing. Which I witnessed was way too amazing. You can see the picture above. I took a boating ride to feel the sightseeing via the lake. You get to behold mountains and locals who all are busy working with their day-to-day activities. You get to shop beautiful Gujarati attires and accessories and can gorge on delicious food. You also get to witness a local performance and have several stalls to admire and indulge in. Sunset Point- Witness a Beautiful Sunset I am unquestionably and beyond doubt obsessed with sunsets. So, you can imagine my excitement when I watched the sun setting in the hills. I was blown away by that sunset and guess what? People can witness how the sunlight affects the plant. Plants have three basic responses or reactions to light. They are photosynthesis, phototropism and photoperiodic. Growth hormones are produced which cause the stem cells on the side away from the light to multiply causing the stem to bend. Gira Falls The main reason behind the trip would be amazing in the rainy season is the waterfall. This is something way more astonishing or beautiful. As we stopped and went in from parking, it was simply superb. Worth stopping by and beautiful fall to feel around. This waterfall was created by the Ambika River flowing through it. It is mostly visited by tourists. This waterfall comes alive during the monsoon season which attracts a lot of people. Avoid going during the summer season as there is no waterfall available, only a big rock is seen and
